baker and elizabeth butler. here's more what he had to say. >> i had a special relationship with butch. he and i started with the department at the same time. we worked as partners together back in the early 1990s. we worked well together. we were close. we were good friends. we worked a lot of cases together. detective elizabeth butler has been with the department for the last ten years. she worked in patrol as a police officer. she was assigned to our narcotics task force for a period of time and then became a detective in this investigation section and found her niche in the case of sexual assault cases. that's where her expertise really lied. that's the type of case that she was investigating yesterday when this tragic event happened. >> when it comes to butch baker, the sheriff said this investigation, the contact they were making with the suspect yesterday is something that he had done thousands of times. after the two detectives were shot and killed, investigators believe that butch baker's vehicle was stolen but the suspect jeremy goulet was not able to leave the immediate area

: elizabeth butler. butler had worked for the santa cruz police department for 10 years, this after attending university of santa cruz while majoring in community services. she grew up in torrence california. on facebook, friends spoke glowingly of her. one wrote, beth was so wonderful. she did so much good fro her community. such a truly great person. butler leaves behind her partner peter and their two young sons, ages 5 and one. terisa estacio, kron 4 news, kron four news. and this was the scene this evening in santa cruz, as the community came out to hold a vigil to grieve the death of the officers lost an officer in the line of duty until yesterday. many people sat down and wrote notes of condolences. a community activist talked with kron four. about the idea to put this gathering together tonight. all of the sympathy notes will be collected and given to the families of both fallen officers, butler and baker. we have the goulet family's reaction to the deadly shootings. still to come later in this newscast. but first a look at weather, >> jacqueline: big changes, more of your forecast, c

to grieve and pray for elizabeth butler and loran "butch" baker. the man who spoke with those officers before they were killed, jesse lemich. he told me that those officers pulled him aside for questioning. >> it took me a lot of convincing to convince them that i was not the suspect. they asked me a lot of questions. she kept repeating, you didn't just come out of that house there? i said, no, i did not. he said we are trying to contact the suspect and he won't open the door and you were walking down the street here and we just assumed that you have come out of that house. >> reporter: after about five minutes, after they let him go, le lemich heard loud gunshots. he just thought it was the officers shooting the suspect not the other way around. police say that jeremy goulet shot and killed the officers when they tried to follow up with him on an incident a couple days ago. on friday police arrested him for breaking into a co-worker's home and trying to make a sexual advance on her. shortly after yesterday's shooting, officers surrounded goulet a short distance away outside a

was confronted by sergeant loran "butch" baker and detective elizabeth butler when they came to branciforte avenue as part of an investigation and jesse was walking nearby. >> i don't know what they were thinking. but they were insistent that i identify myself and make sure i was not the one they were looking for or that i was not involved in whatever was going on. >> reporter: when he convinced them -- >> he shook my hand and said you can understand why we're so defensive out here. we have a job. >> reporter: they were apparently looking for this man, 35-year-old jeremy goulet. and when they found him, investigators say goulet shot the two officers death. >> when i heard the gunfire, i just assumed it was the officers who were taking out the suspect, knows the other way around. >> reporter: goulet took off and law enforcement swarmed the scene. he was found a half hour later at this property on doyle street. >> the shooter must have jumped over the fence. i saw him coming down here and down the path and then another round of bullets.
